27 percent more BMWs by 2020

German carmaker BMW has the intention to ramp up its annual production by 27 percent to reach 3 million units in 2020, German newspaper Handelsblatt reports. Part of the plan is to build the next-gen X5 in China, where the brand allegedly wants to double its overall production volume to 600,000 cars.

North America and Mexico would see their capacity grow from 410,000 to 750,000 units. BMW is pulling out all the stops to become the world’s number one premium carmaker, a spot currently held by Swabian rival Mercedes-Benz. Electrification is an important factor in BMW’s offensive, but the same message can be heard in Stuttgart, where Daimler is accelerating the launch of the EQ sub brand.
