EC promotes sustainable urban mobility

As the annual European Mobility Week (EMW) kicks off, the European Commission (EC) has committed itself to the same goal as that initiative: promoting sustainable urban mobility.

The slogan of this year's EMW is: “Sharing gets you further”, and many of the projects in more than 2,000 participating towns and cities across the EU are indeed focused on encouraging people to use shared forms of transportation, such as bicycles and carsharing.

The idea is that shared mobility reduces congestion and pollution, and contributes significantly to the decarbonisation of urban transport. For example: one shared car eliminates the need for 15 privately-owned cars.
“But it's not only about cars”, says Violeta Bulc, European Commissioner for Transport. “We are witnessing a real explosion of shared bike systems in cities and towns across the EU. This is important, as we need to ensure that the future of urban mobility is both shared and sustainable”.

The European Mobility Week will include events such as car-free days all across Europe and the second edition of the European day without a road death, which aims at raising awareness on road safety.
