Porsche sells 80,000 Macan, posts 25% profit rise

2015 has been remarkably kind to the premium sports car maker in terms of profitability. According to a statement made today, Porsche’s operating profit went up 25% to 3.4 billion euros, while revenue grew to 21.5 billion euros.

Much of this is owed to the midsize SUV Macan, of which the carmaker from Zuffenhausen sold 80,000 units last year. The second most popular model is the Cayenne, with 73,119 units. "Porsche continues to be on success course in the current year as well," CEO Oliver Blume said in the statement. Sales in the first two months of 2016 grew 14 percent, in spite of a cooling Chinese market.

To maintain the Macan’s momentum, Porsche will be adding a new entry-level petrol engine to the range. This new 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 252 PS, while its NEDC consumption is 7.2 l/100km.

The sports car manufacturer is also developing a plug-in hybrid 911 and an all-electric four door sedan to compete with Tesla. The new Panamera should be unveiled in the second half of this year, with sales starting in 2017.
