Shared cars in Netherlands up 22% in a year

Annual figures released by CroW-KpVV indicate there currently are 30,697 shared cars in the Netherlands. That’s around 5,700 more than last year, which represents an increase of almost 23%. Just over 85% of the new shared cars are available via peer-to-peer platforms, with apps enabling users to rent vehicles directly from private car owners.

Carsharing has been growing fast in the Netherlands for some time now. The biggest growth continues to be in the four largest cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht), but is now also accelerating in more rural areas. The biggest player in roundtrip carsharing is Greenwheels.

Around 4% of shared cars are electric, while the national average is just 1%. A noticeable new trend is the inclusion of carsharing in new housing projects, with developers keen to include shared cars into the concept for their buildings. The growing popularity in carsharing is related to the cultural shift from ownership to usage, which is also fuelling the rise in private leasing in the Netherlands.
