Skoda hits 18 million production mark

More than 110 years after the Czech manufacturer built its very first automobile, a candy-white Superb Combi rolled off the assembly line as the 18 millionth Skoda.

It was the Kvasiny plant – the youngest of the three Skoda factories in the Czech Republic – that had the honour of putting together the milestone car. It is currently undergoing the largest modernization and expansion in its history, involving an investment of around seven billion crowns. Over the coming years, the production capacity of the East Bohemian site will increase to 280,000 vehicles per year. It is estimated that 1,300 people will be hired along the way.

In addition to the Yeti, Kvasiny also produces the Superb and Superb Combi. In the future, it will also be building Skoda’s upcoming SUV models, the first of which will be revealed in Geneva in March.

The previous milestone in Skoda’s production history – the 15 millionth unit – was reached less than three years ago, implying that the VW-owned Czech brand has been producing slightly more than 1 million cars per year on average since.
