Skoda Octavia: split headlights, more connectivity

The successful Czech Volkswagen subsidiary recently presented the facelifted version of its C/D segment five door saloon and estate, the fleet-favourite Octavia. Touching the design of your best-selling model – after 20 years of production, the counter reads 5 million units – is always tricky. That is why it comes as a bit of a surprise that the carmaker goes against the current design flow, introducing split headlights – and perhaps polarising opinions.

Of course there is more to this ‘Lifecycle Impulse’ than a few cosmetic tweaks. Skoda has done its homework, adding safety equipment and convenience – either as standard or against a supplement. The most interesting addition is the predictive pedestrian protection feature of the Front Assist system. Finally the Octavia also gains access to a few technologies that in the meantime have become mainstream, i.e. Blind Spot Detection and Rear Traffic Alert.

True to is Simply Clever philosophy, the brand now offers the possibility for different users of the same vehicle to save their preferences. Last but not least: the enhanced infotainment systems in the redesigned dashboard. The Swing sound system provides extensive connectivity, including to the SmartLink+ platform. This is compatible with the standards MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In addition, the optional SmartGate feature allows you to retrieve vehicle data from your smartphone and to use it intelligently with specific apps. The Amundsen navigation system can be used to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot, giving passengers free access to the Internet to surf, stream and access email with their smartphones and tablets.
