Tesla Supercharger no longer free

Tesla's supercharger

To the surprise of many, Tesla has communicated that from now on Model S and Model X customers will have to pay for the use of the Supercharger network in Europe – if they have ordered their car after January 15. Existing owners can continue to charge their Teslas for free.

In concrete terms, every new customer gets a 400 kWh credit, equalling a range or more or less 1,600 km, after which every extra kWh is charged. The rates depend on the country and range from €0.17 per kWh in Germany to €0.25 in Italy.

Moreover, Tesla drivers who haven’t used up their 400 kWh credit by the end of the year cannot transfer the unused kWh to the following year. Another interesting new rule implemented by Tesla is that existing owners who occupy a charging station without reason, i.e. linger on the dedicated parking spot after the car has been charged, will be billed an idling fee. In most European countries, this fee equals € 0.35 per minute.
