Japan earthquake affects car production
|
The earthquake and tsunami of March in Japan have affected car production by the country’s principal car manufacturers. Some 335,000 units were lost in April in Japanese factories, reports autoactu, with a further 215,000 lost due to the knock-on effect of lack of parts, in other factories around the world. The impact was unbalanced across the car-makers, though. Toyota, for example, produces just over half of its cars in its home country, and thus suffered greatly. April production here plummeted by three quarters, against a quarter in its foreign plants. Nissan, by contrast, produces far fewer cars in Japan, and was even able to increase its Spanish output during the month. Honda experienced a high impact on its foreign sites, and in percentage terms it was the most affected of the three, losing over 150,000 units in April, and producing just 140,000 across all factories.
