London fleets may face more congestion charges
|
The City of London has announced that it intends to improve air quality in the capital. One of the measures being considered is to raise the emissions threshold from which cars have to pay the congestion charge. The proposal is to make all new cars with emissions of over 80 grams per km liable for the daily charge from 2013, rather than over 100 grams as now. The body responsible for this programme, Transport for London, is to monitor the development of electric vehicles to see whether the scheme would be viable. Cars currently on the market which bear ‘green’ labels would all find themselves paying the charge, reports Fleet News, including the Toyota Prius hybrid and Volkswagen BlueMotion, both under 100 grams but over 80. TfL will review the situation next year. Any move could represent a significant extra cost for fleets.
