Flanders adopts HERE to manage traffic platform

Flanders has entrusted the management of C-ITS, the open platform that runs its transport system, to mapping specialist HERE. The deal is hoped to improve network efficiency and traffic safety in the Belgian region.

HERE will centralise the relevant data on its own Open Location Platform, and from there provide drivers with information that is critical to their safety, for example warning them of obstacles ahead, such as traffic slowdowns or stoppages, road works or stationary vehicles, or even bad weather.

The collaboration between Flanders and HERE, which was acquired from Nokia by a consortium of consisting of Audi, BMW, and Daimler in 2015, will involve a nine-month C-ITS pilot project as part of the European Commission's C-Roads initiative. The project will use existing cellular networks to allow users to assess the performance of a cooperative transport system, and to generate data on the organisational and commercial aspects of a digital platform with the potential to offer a variety of services by a variety of providers.

The project will cover a number of major motorways in Flanders, notably the E34, one of the busiest traffic corridors in Europe, and also the E312, E17/E19 and E40, pictured.
