France to double tax credit for home charging

France outline and flag

The French government wants to double the tax credit for the installation at home of a charging station for electric vehicles.

It is one of the measures announced by Environment Minister Ségolène Royal to combat air pollution in France. Others include extending a purchase premium for EVs to electrical LCVs, and exempting EVs from road tolls – the latter measure still under negotiation with the motorway operators.

The current tax rules grant a tax credit amounting to 30% of the purchase price for households investing in optimising the energy performance of their residence. Mrs. Royal wants to increase that credit to 60% when it concerns the installation of a home charging station for Electric Vehicles.

The measure should help Mrs. Royal hit the target she announced on 1 October: 1 million EV charging points within three years, of which 900,000 at private residences and 100,000 open to the public. Mid-September, France barely had 14,250 charging points, distributed across 4,492 stations.
