Renault recalls 15,800 Captur diesels
Renault is recalling 15,800 Captur diesels (110 hp; pictured) in order to install a software upgrade that fixes an emissions glitch. The manufacturer is also offering similar updates for another 700,000 Renaults on a voluntary basis. The fixes, aimed at reducing NOx emissions, will be available to vehicles with the latest Euro 6 generation of diesel engines.
Renault has lost €3.3 billion in market value since it was revealed last week that its offices had been raided by French government fraud investigators. These had discovered that real-world NOx emissions far surpassed laboratory test results. France started investigating emissions of diesel cars by all manufacturers after the VW emissions scandal broke last September.
By offering fixes this quickly, Renault is hoping to avoid an emissions scandal with the same dimensions as Volkswagen's. "We are not cheating, we are meeting the norms, and we are not trying to trick the consumer," said Renault CCO Thierry Bolloré. Fixing the filters in the Captur will take about half a day per engine.
