Self-driving Teslas ready within 6 months

Elon Musk, head of Tesla

In a recent tweet Elon Musk stated that the first Tesla with full-autonomous capability will roll off the production line three to six months from now. That would make automotive history and give the ‘disruptive’ Californian EV brand a lead of several years over its mainstream competitors.

Tesla has been making improvements to its Autopilot software, addressing the problems that lead to the several crash incidents last year. According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigating the May 2016 fatal crash in the US involving a Tesla Model S with Autopilot on, these improvements are effective and have lowered Tesla’s car crash rate by 40 percent.

Responding to a question about the value of integrating “Full Self Driving Capability” into the company’s products ahead of “regulatory approval,” Musk tweeted: “…safety should improve significantly due to autonomy features, even if regulations disallow no driver present.”

To a subsequent question asking how soon “full” self-driving, beyond Autopilot’s abilities, would arrive, Musk replied: “3 months maybe, 6 months definitely.”
