Technology no substitute for driver attention
|
The danger of believing that modern car technology can take the place of driver attention has been pointed out by Arval. Fleet and Road Safety Manager Tracey Scarr comments: “We welcome the continuing development of safety-driven vehicle technologies to assist drivers. From seat-belts through to crumple zones, airbags and now advanced driver assistance systems, the benefits are proven However, technology is just one side of the coin and the driver must not get lazy, relying upon such assistance alone to keep him/her safe and accident free. It is imperative that good driving skills and habits continue to be promoted and encouraged and instances of bad driving highlighted and corrected”. Figures have shown that aids such as parking assistance have helped reduce accidents across the Arval fleet by 25% over two years. However, a recent University of Huddersfield report indicates that more than 50 people a year are still killed due to reversing manoeuvres on the road.
