Wayve trialling autonomous vans with UK supermarket

UK supermarket Asda and Wayve trial autonomous delivery

UK-based autonomous mobility start-up Wayve is partnering with UK ‘big four’ supermarket Asda to trial autonomous delivery vans as part of the retailer’s last-mile operation.

Connected fleet technology is set to revolutionise transport. Take a deep dive into understanding the future by registering for the Connected Fleets Conference.

The trial is scheduled to start early in 2022 and Asda is the first to commercially test the solution. Wayve’s expertise in deep machine learning will help the vans navigate complex urban delivery routes in London.

The trial will last for 12 months, during which time the vans will operate with a supervising driver. The project will give Wayve and Asda valuable insight into how they can shape the future of last-mile delivery.

Exploring the possibilities of autonomous vehicles

Simon Gregg, Vice President Online Grocery at Asda, commented: “We want to explore how autonomous vehicle technology can enhance our operating model as well as the experience for our colleagues and customers.”

Alex Kendall, Wayve CEO, said: “Last-mile delivery represents an ideal first use case for the Wayve Driver, which can navigate the complexities of urban driving and easily adapt to new routes. We are excited to be working with Asda as our first commercial partner.”
