Amsterdam is ViaVan's first EU location

Shared taxi service ViaVan has debuted in Amsterdam. It's the first European location for the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and U.S. mobility startup Via.

The ViaVan app connects passengers with similar locations, departure times and destinations to a van they can share to get there – offering an affordable and convenient addition to the already available public and private mobility options.

For the first two weeks, rides within Amsterdam city centre will cost just €2 per person. The regular price thereafter will be €5. The company has announced that other European cities will follow suit, notably Berlin and London.

Via started in New York City in 2012, with just five vans. The company currently provides more than 1.5 million shared rides per month in the city and has since expanded to Chicago and Washington.

The Via technology is licensed to transportation players around the world, from Texas to Australia. The joint venture with Mercedes-Benz was set up last September.
