BMW kills i3 REX, confirms i4 for 2020

Now that the revamped i3 offers 300 km of range with its new 42.2-kWh battery, BMW reckons the optional range extender (REX) - a compact two-cylinder petrol engine that acts as a generator - is no longer necessary. It has therefore decided to strike the REX model from the European catalogue.

At the same time, the Bavarian premium OEM has confirmed that the production version of the 2017 i Vision Dynamics showcar shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show will enter production in 2020. It won't be called i5, as speculated by many, but i4. It will feature a 120 kW-h battery enabling a range of 700 km.
