Nissan cancels X-Trail production in England

Nissan will not manufacture the new X-Trail SUV in its factory in Sunderland, England, citing uncertainty around the UK’s relationship with the European Union after Brexit.

It is another sign of the decline of British automotive manufacturing, on which Fleet Europe reported last week.

Nissan said it will only produce the X-Trail in Japan. The company also said it is increasing spending on new powertrains for future European vehicles.

The factory in Sunderland is where Nissan builds the Qashqai, the Juke, the Leaf and the Inifitini Q30 and QX30. Nissan said investment for next-generation models is unaffected by the decision to cancel the X-Trail.

The Nissan factory builds around 30% of the UK’s 1.52 million cars, making it the largest car factory in the country. Last year, production feel 11% in response to declining diesel sales.
