OEMs selling cars in the European Union are facing tough times: 2020 is the year in which they need to get their weighted average fleet emissions to 95g/km.

Not reaching their targets means the OEMs will have to pay hefty fines: 95 euro per gram they exceed their target, for every vehicle sold. That could lead to billions of euros in total – reason enough for the car manufacturers to push electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles into the market in 2020. It’s no coincidence that a whole bunch of new models are ready to flood the European Continent next year.

Giving the e-wave all the more momentum will be the supercredits the EU gives OEMs next year: every car that emits less than 50g/km counts double in the calculation of the fleet average.

Disruption assured, unless…

The market appetite for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles is growing, but market projections show that supply is likely to be greater than demand. Facing heavy fines, OEMs are limited in their options: give considerable discounts on new EVs and PHEVs while making ICE vehicles less available and/or attractive, or self-register them and sell them off as zero mileage cars, taking a loss anyway.

That would have an immediate effect on residual values and destabilise the market. There are other solutions, though. Solutions that avoid disruption by discretely spreading new and nearly new EVs and PHEVs across Europe through professional B2B channels, linking real demand with supply before it becomes oversupply and hence an issue.

OEMs, importers and dealers had better be prepared and consider all their options, as Tom Knaepkens, CEO of Andex, and Matthias Popp, Global VP Testing Services of Business Line Transportation at SGS, will explain during the free webinar on Wednesday 28 November at 2PM. Register now!
