Swiss students outpace Tesla

May we introduce you to the Grimsel? You have probably  never heard of this creation. That’s not important, but keep in mind the Grimsel may become the next hype in the auto market. The Grimsel is in fact an electric car developed by two Swiss schools for advanced education. While everybody is looking at the Tesla Motors Model S, academic teams in different countries are working at their own version of the car of the future. Is the Grimsel a candidate for becoming part of the future car market? That depends on the next steps the developers of the car take. There’s a whole world of difference between the development of a prototype and successfully selling a car on the mass market. 


Twice as fast as the Model S


The Grimsel is the brainchild of the technical schools ETH Zurich and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, which have cooperated in developing an electric car capable of meeting some ambitious goals. A few weeks ago a test drive of the Grimsel showed it was capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in less than two seconds. This is a record, and is twice as fast as the Tesla Model S. According to the students this is only the beginning, and improving their concept should make it possible to build a car that can do even better. If they succeed, the Grimsel could well cause a revolution on the EV car market.


Less than a year


The achievement of the students of the two technical schools is even more impressive when it is taken into account that the Grimsel was developed and assembled in less than a year. The Swiss teams claim to have beaten the existing world record for a similar car built by a team of students at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. They hope to be ratified by the Guinness Book of World Records. But of course that’s only a part of the story, everybody involved in the project is above all hoping that the Grimsel can become a commercial success. The Grimsel is indeed a fast car, but may not be able to be used in rainy weather. So some adjustments have to be made to prevent this promising electric car disappearing in the archives of a school instead of making a successful entry into the dealers’ showrooms.
