EV sales up 25% in Belgium

In Belgium, EV sales (i.e. combined BEV and PHEV sales) have increased by 25% in 2021 the previous year, says FEBIAC, the Belgian Federation of Automobile and Cycle Industry. 

Expressed as a share of the total market, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and self-rechargeable electric vehicles (HEVs) made up 17.5% in 2021, while battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) represented 5.3%. In all, that raises the total market share of electrified vehicles to 23.5% of the Belgian new-vehicle market.

As a result of the country's rising EV sales, the average CO₂ emissions of a newly sold car in Belgium have fallen from 107.9 g/km in 2020 to 97.1 g/km in 2021 - a record low. 

Fleet electrification 

Fleets continue to be the main driver of electrification.

• In 2021, 22,669 BEVs were registered in Belgium. Nine out of 10 were registered by companies or freelancers.
• The same ratio applies to PHEVs, with 90.3% of the 44,815 registrations pertaining to companies or self-employed professionals. 
• As for HEVs, just 43.7% of the 19,516 new cars registered were acquired by companies or freelancers. 

Despite the rise in EV sales, petrol cars also witnessed a slight increase in market share, albeit just 0.2%. They reached a market share of 52%. Meanwhile, diesel cars continued to lose ground, falling to just 9.2% of the Belgian new-vehicle market last year.
