‘Easy Péage’: Europe’s first contactless toll solution for rentals
US-based smart mobility specialist Verra Mobility and Rent A Car, a French short-term rental provider, are partnering on ‘Easy Péage’, Europe’s first contactless toll payment solution for rental cars.
‘Easy Péage’ is an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) payment service designed for the French toll highway network (pictured: toll plaza on the A2 at Hordain). It enables drivers to pay toll fees automatically and safely.
Time and fuel
As the first of its kind offered in rental vehicles, it will allow rental drivers to skip the cash or credit card toll plazas at the entrance of toll highways and use the ‘Liber-T’ lanes instead, without contact or stopping the vehicle. The solution not only saves time and fuel, but also allows drivers to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
For a daily fee of €2.5 (capped at €12.5), Rent A Car customers will soon be able to get a car with an ETC box fixed on the windshield. This allows them to use the ‘Liber-T’ payment gates at any of France’s motorway toll plazas. The cost will be automatically debited from the credit card they used to rent the car.
‘Easy Péage’ is being tested at around Rent A Car 50 locations in France. The aim is to roll it out across the company’s entire French network, and for all its cars, by the end of 2020.
“This will make Rent A Car the only rental company in France and even in Europe to offer an ETC payment solution for French tolls, on board its fleet of vehicles,” says Anne-Catherine Péchinot, Managing Director of Rent A Car.
“In the US, millions of vehicle renters each year enjoy the convenience from contactless toll payments. We look forward to bringing this not only to the EU, but ultimately to countries with toll roads all around the world,” adds David Roberts, CEO of Verra Mobility.
