Every new home in England must have EV charge point

England will become the first country in the world to pass a law requiring all new homes and and non-residential buildings to have an electric vehicle charge point.

The UK Government has also confirmed its intention to mandate that all home and workplace electric vehicle chargers must be capable of smart charging that can automatically charge vehicles during off-peak periods, said Rachel Maclean MP,  Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport).

Home charging is the cheapest and most convenient solution for company car and van drivers, so long as they have off-street parking.

In a consultation document published in July, the UK Government proposed that every new residential building with a parking space should have a charge point. It also proposed that every new non-residential building with more than 10 parking spaces should have at least one charge point for every five spaces; and every exisiting non-residential car park with more than 20 parking spaces must install a charge point before 2025.

The Government plans to pass the legislation this year.
