Will Grecale boost fleet appeal for Maserati?

The ambitious expansion plans of Italian luxury carmaker include making a stronger mark on the fleet market. Its first steps in that direction, the compact saloon Ghibli and SUV Levante, are soon accompanied by the cross-over Grecale which comes also with an all-electric drive.

In March, the camouflage on these pictures will be completely ripped off. However, tonnes of imagination are not required to figure out the looks of Maserati’s new model. As an opponent for the BMW X4 and Porsche Macan, the Grecale is slightly larger at 4.85 meters and offers competitive interior space with a wheelbase of 2.9 meters.

Maserati intends to have electric offerings over its entire range as of 2025, but the Grecale makes its debut with a mild-hybrid version of the 2-liter engine. However, the compact SUV is set to initiate the broader electric revolution of the brand, so the BEV version is expected soon as next year. Not in the least because the launch of the model has been delayed several times, but the development of the electric version has been ongoing. It is rumored that an 800-volt architecture will be implemented, significantly shortening charging times.

Hybrid at launch

The Grecale doesn’t sit on a dedicated battery platform from the parent company Stellantis but uses the so-called Giorgio underpinnings also found at Alfa (Giulia and Stelvio). At launch, the 2.0 MHEV will deliver 300 hp and feature a 48-volt battery and an eBooster that shoves the engine in lower regimes. CO2 figures are yet to be confirmed.

Maserati is targeting a new type of customer with Grecale. A younger profile who wants to stand from the crowd and seeks an alternative to German premium brands. The model must secure a wider audience for the manufacturer.
