Eurocell in final talks to build massive gigafactory in the Netherlands
Back in February 2022, we published a story reporting that Anglo-Korean company Eurocell had secured funding and support to build what it described as a “world beating” gigafactory in Europe and be production-ready in just 12 months. At that time, the exact location was undecided but the UK, Netherlands and Spain were in the running.
Yesterday, the company confirmed it is in “advanced discussions” with authorities and investment development agencies in the Netherlands for the factory to be sited there. This makes sense as the Netherlands has so far been at the forefront of climate change action and the proposed gigafactory will create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs and transfer skills from Korean battery experts.
40 million battery cells by 2025
Eurocell intends to construct its new Gigafactory in two phases reaching full capacity as early as 2025. The first phase will produce advanced battery cells at scale by early 2023 for existing European customers. The second phase, potentially on the same site, will be capable of producing more than 40 million cells per year by 2025.

Leveraging Korea’s experience in electro-chemistry
Eurocell’s batteries, developed in Korea, also have a considerable technical advantage, the company claims, lasting over ten times longer than conventional lithium-ion cells, making them more sustainable, with no ‘end of life’ issues and perfect for ESS applications given they are also safe.
