Phone ban for cyclists in the Netherlands

Following similar bans for motorists, Dutch cyclists may soon be banned from using their phones while riding their bikes. The Dutch minister for Infrastructure and Public Works, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, has introduced a bill to that effect.

Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen wants to ban the use of mobile phones or any other electronic device (tablet, media player etc.) from 1 July 2019.

The minister points out the growing need of this ban as bicycle traffic has grown considerable and speed differences are wider than they used to be with the advent of electric bikes.
