Series of Diesel bans extend in Germany

The series of diesel bans imposed by court in Germany is extended now with the cities of Gelsenkirchen and Essen.

A German administrative court has ruled that both cities, including a part of the A40 autobahn in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, must ban older diesel vehicles. The ban is forced by the DUH environmental lobby group who has set up similar lawsuits for various other German cities, including Frankfurt, Aachen, Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf and Mainz. The group wants to address air pollution, which is moreover interesting in this area, which is located in the Ruhr region, one of Germany's most densely populated areas. The diesel ban in Gelsenkirchen and Essen will come into effect next year.
