Dutch province switches to biodiesel

The Dutch Friesland province, in the north of the country, is switching to biodiesel on a large scale. Diesel drivers can fill up their cars with biodiesel made from frying oil, and discarded plastics or rubber.

The new fuel is around 20 cents more expensive per liter but it is better for the environment.

The product is provided by the Lybian oil company Tamoil. It is the third manufacturer of biodiesel in the Netherlands.

Scientists, however, are reluctant to use plants as a source of fuel as they do not grow efficiently. Plants convert only 2% of the collected sunlight into fuel, which means it is more environmentally friendly to cover a field with solar cells.
