ASKUL is first company worldwide to go 100% electric and renewable

ASKUL Corporation is the first company worldwide to simultaneously commit to going completely electric and switching to 100% renewable power by 2030.

The Japanese e-commerce specialist has done so by joining both EV100 and RE100 – twin campaigns of The Climate Group which promote the switch to electric mobility and renewable energy, respectively.

Via its wholly-owned subsidiary ASKUL LOGIST, the company will switch 200 vehicles to EVs by 2030. An initial 10 EVs were already purchased last year. Next year, ASKUL intends to source renewable power for its logistics centres in Japan.

The Climate Group CEO Helen Clarkson hailed the “exciting momentum on corporate action in Japan (…) It makes business sense – transitioning to electric vehicles and renewable power are two positive steps that companies can take to future-proof their operations”.

The Japanese government aims to reduce the 71% of total electricity consumption that is based on fossil fuels by stimulating the introduction of renewable energy sources, and targets an increase in the number of EVs from 200,000 in 2016 to 1 million by 2020.
