A new twist to working from home: lease a mobile office pod

Over three-quarters of EU employees want to continue working from home at least partially, even once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Nevertheless, not everyone has comfortable office space at home to make that possible. A leasing company in the Netherlands has a solution: a mobile office pod you can put in your garden.

The leasing company, Fleximo, says their Officecube mobile office has two advantages. Firstly, it is a way for companies to shrink their fleets while still offering their employees something in return and secondly, they make it easier for people working from home to do so in a comfortable environment.

The Officecube can be offered as a stand-alone product or as a mobility budget option for €298. In the Netherlands, it does not require a building permit and the power supply is no more than a regular 220V plug.

Comparing these prices to the cost of office space is complex. On average, an employee needs at least 4m2, but that climbs to around 10m2 if you include shared spaces like meeting rooms, cafeterias, hallways. In Amsterdam, 10m2 of office space cost €4,750 per year or just under €400 per month, according to figures published by Statista. Of course that does not include transport to and from the office.

Putting a mobile office in your garden isn't ideal for all employees – to start with, you need the space to put it. But it may turn out to become one option in the future of working and of mobility, alongside public transport, flexible mobility services, coworking spaces and indeed the traditional company car.
