€1000 fine for smoking in a car with children in it

The parliament of the Flemish region (the Northern half of Belgium) has unanimously passed a bill to ban smoking in cars with children in it. The Walloon government (Southern half of Belgium) passed a similar bill earlier.

In response to slow decision-making processes in the federal government, both regions have decided to take matters in their own hands. No similar bill has yet been passed for the third Belgian region, Brussels. Not respecting the new law can cost you dearly: the fine amounts to €1,000.

It remains to be seen whether the law will be enforced in Belgium, where the risk of being caught for not following traffic related rules is notoriously low.
