Autonomous vehicle testing without safety driver allowed in London and the Netherlands

Two test routes for autonomous vehicles without a safety driver have been announced for London. At the same time, the Dutch government defined strict criteria to allow testing of autonomous cars on previously approved stretches public roads.

In London, the trials will take place in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 24km of existing roads across both sites. Developers will also have the ability to design their own test routes on public roads in a real-world urban environment.

Industry insiders agree that testing autonomous vehicles in real-world environments is essential to perfecting and rolling out driverless cars.

Netherlands

That’s also what will happen in the Netherlands, where a new law allows the Infrastructure Minister, after consultation with the police, the government agencies responsible for public roads and a traffic safety institute, to grant a permit for test routes along predefines stretches of public roads. Testing also needs to be performed at predefined times.
