Microsoft, Moovit and TomTom form powerful MaaS partnership

A new partnership between three major players in the mobility sector has created a powerful new information platform to support people travelling to and from work.

Mapping, tracking and navigation specialist TomTom, MaaS provider Moovit, and Microsoft Azure Maps have together created a multi-modal journey planner.

The platform combines Moovit’s public transport trip planning expertise with TomTom’s driving and parking information. And by integrating Moovit and TomTom with Azure Maps, developers will be able to integrate multi-modal trip planning to their mobility, smart city and logistics solutions.

Chris Pendleton, head of Azure Maps, said, “With most jobs still residing in densely populated cities, the typical commute is becoming multimodal: requiring the suburbanite to first drive to a public transit stop and continue their commute on a train, bus, scooter or bike. The number of decisions that fall on the commuter to make are also greater than ever before – from choosing between transit options to estimating parking availability – and this solution lifts that burden from them by tackling complete first-mile and last-mile optimisation.”

The partnership means third-party developers will be able to create complete multi-modal route planning with accurate times of arrival, said Nir Erez, chief executive officer, Moovit. The Moovit app already delivers more than 5 million journey plans every day to more than 350 million users in 88 countries.

“This will lead to commuters having the best option to plan a trip combining legs on public transit, ride-sharing, bike or scooter, and other legs by car, including finding available parking lot spaces in real-time,” said Erez.

* The integration of big data, mobility management and cutting-edge fleet technology will be at the heart of the Connected Fleets Conference in Brussels on 15-16 May.
