New scandal for Volkswagen

Various German media report Volkswagen sold up to 6,700 preproduction vehicles without type approval. It could be the second scandal for Volkswagen in a short time, as the company is still dealing with the emission cheating scandal.

The preproduction vehicles were test vehicles that can differ from series production cars and that are usually destroyed.

Allegedly, the 6,700 were sold mainly in Germany but also in other European countries and in the United States. In part, they were offered on the market as new vehicles but others were sold as second-hand cars. Only Volkswagen brand vehicles are involved, no other Volkswagen Group vehicles without type approval were sold.

Volkswagen confirms the reports and describes it as “a terrible mistake”. The company has launched a recall.

The German authorities are investigating whether Volkswagen should be fined for this error. It would be the second serious encounter of Volkswagen with authorities since the emission cheating scandal broke out in 2015.
