Fiat ends diesel Panda

Fiat has ended production of diesel-powered versions of its Panda small city car, report various sources.

The news is part of FCA’s new business plan that was announced in June and that included phasing out diesel engines on all passenger vehicles by 2021.

The new WLTP emissions test procedure, which came into force on 1 September, may have accelerated the decision to discontinue the diesel Panda.

According to market researchers JATA Dynamics, the diesel share of Pandas sold in the first eight months of 2018 was 15% or just over 17,000 units.

The same 1.3 litre-diesel engine offered in the Panda was also available in the 500, in which it is also being phased out. Diesel 500s account for only 4% of all 500 sales in Europe.
