Amazon to buy 7,000 electric vans by 2025 in Europe

Amazon has announced plans to invest more than €1 billion over the next five years to electrify its European fleet and become carbon net zero by 2040.

The investment will see the online retail giant company operate at least 10,000 electric vans for last mile deliveries (it already has more than 3,000 electric vans in Europe) by 2025, and more than 1,500 electric heavy commercial vehicles for ‘middle mile’ logistics.

Amazon will also install thousands of charge points in the car parks of its European facilities, with a special focus on fast chargers capable of recharging electric heavy goods vehicles in just two hours. Volvo Trucks will deliver fully electric 44-tonne trucks with a range of up to 300km to Amazon in Germany by the end of this year.

At the other end of the delivery chain, the company is developing a series of micro-hubs in cities such as Paris, Munich and London from where it can make deliveries on foot or by e-cargo bikes.

Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, said: “Our transportation network is one of the most challenging areas of our business to decarbonise, and to achieve net-zero carbon will require a substantial and sustained investment. Deploying thousands of electric vans, long-haul trucks, and bikes will help us shift further away from traditional fossil fuels—and hopefully, further encourage transportation and automotive industries in Europe and around the world to continue scaling and innovating, as we will have to work together to reach our climate goals.”
