E-mobility upgrade in Berlin

With 1,600 additional EV charge points to be installed in 2019 Berlin is getting an e-mobility upgrade.

The ‘Neue Berliner Luft’ project has to drive Berlin’s e-mobility. The deployment of 1,600 EV charge points will be led by Ubitricity, a leading company in smart charging solutions. Ubitricity deployed a similar project in London, where it has converted 300 street lamps in smart charging points since 2016. Additionally, Ubitricity developed a portable charging system which can digitally and remotely monitor charging for billing or fleet management, by the use of a SmartCable.

The project is part of a wider initiative to clean the air in Germany, the Immediate Clean Air Programme (Sofortprogramm Saubere Luft), which can be seen in the line of German cities deploying diesel bans and having been taken to court due to their failure to meet European air quality standards. Therefore, the project is supported by the research institutions TU Berlin and DLR, and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

In the end, the project will install public and private charging stations. About 1,000 public charge points will be deployed, while 600 additional charge points will be installed in the private sector, contributed by project partner GASAG.
