Private lease generates 60% of Dutch fleet growth

Over the past year, the overall lease fleet in the Netherlands has risen by 9.3% to 860,000 vehicles. Private lease contracts represent no less that 60% of that growth – i.e. about 43,900 vehicles.

Figures released by Dutch vehicle leasing trade association VNA also show that business leases on cars represented 27% of the annual growth, while leased LCVs represented another 13%.

Rapid growth
In total, there were about 64,000 private lease contracts in the Netherlands at the end of 2016, and about 103,000 by the end of last year, according to VNA estimates.

All signs point to continued and rapid growth of the private lease segment in the Netherlands. Previous reports indicate a 22.1% growth in private lease registrations for 2017, as compared to 2016.

Price segments
According to the VNA, the typical private lease driver is between 26 and 55 years old, although the drivers in the age group of 56 and over is now fast increasing.

Also, the typical privately-leased car is no longer just a small vehicle. The trend is clearly towards the middle and upper price segment.

More expensive
At the moment, Dutch private lease drivers are still mainly opting for petrol cars. VNA director Renate Hemerik insists the government should promote private leasing of electric vehicles.

“EVs at present are still significantly more expensive than petrol cars. Clean electric cars should also be a viable option for private lease drivers”, she was quoted in Automotive Management magazine.
