Sweden to ban fossil-fuel cars by 2030

Sweden will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in 2030. That was announced by Stefan Löfven, the country's new prime minister. The measure brings Sweden (pictured: downtown Stockholm) in line with Norway and Denmark, who have announced similar bans for 2025 and 2030, respectively.  In all, 10 countries have now committed to banning the sale of fossil-fuel cars, albeit at different speeds. For the UK and France, the target is 2040.

With this measure, Sweden aims to reduce harmful emissions and speed up compliance with the goals in the Paris Climate Deal, Mr Löfven told the Swedish parliament in his maiden speech. He also outlined a plan for a nationwide network of EV charging stations. The ultimate aim is for Sweden to be free of fossil fuel by 2050.
