New tyre labels for Europe from May 2021

From May 2021, new tyres will come with updated labels that will give consumers more information about the tyre’s characteristics and is intended to allow consumers to choose more fuel-efficient tyres. The label will also feature a QR code linking to the EU database.

The European Union has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to reach climate neutrality by 2050. Reducing CO2 emissions from road transport is an important part of the strategy to reach that goal and choosing the right tyre can contribute to that. For that reason, a new label will appear on all new tyres sold in Europe from 1 May 2021.

The new label will include the following elements:

  • Trade name or brand
  • QR code linking to the EU product database
  • Tyre type identification
  • Tyre size, load index, speed index
  • Snow handle pictogram
  • Ice grip pictogram

The letter code for rolling resistance has been updated and will go from the top score of A to the lowest score of E. Braking performance in the wet will be scored on the same A to E scale. Decibel level will now be included on a scale from A to C instead of the old system with one to three sound waves.
