Revamped Hyundai Ioniq gets 300 km WLTP range

EVs have started their ascent in European fleets and one of the models that deserves credit for that is the Hyundai Ioniq Electric. It’s main USP is that it offers a highly-efficient powertrain, meaning it can do with a less bulky and hence less expensive battery pack.

When it was launched In 2016, the Ioniq offered good value for money compared to its competitors, the VW e-Golf and Nissan Leaf.However, the latter two have improved their battery capacity and value proposition in the meantime, leaving the Ioniq in a less competitive position. Hyundai now makes amends with a midlife revamp, which includes the introduction of a 38,3kWh battery – an increase of 36% over the first model and enough for nearly 300 km under WLTP conditions, based on a consumption of 13kWh/100km.

That is 10% better than the standard Nissan Leaf and even a 28% advantage over the VW e-Golf. Still, the Ioniq carries a more modest pricetag, which does increase by about €1,500 compared to the current model.

Enhanced connectivity

Apart from a bigger battery, the refreshed Hyundai Ioniq features an enhanced onboard charger (7.2kW instead of 6.6) and can now take 70 kW DC to reach 80% charge in 54 minutes.

As icing on the cake, the new Ioniq comes with extra connectivity in the shape of an app enabling you to remotely lock/unlock and preclimatise the vehicle as well as program and monitor the charging process. Finally, the Live services of the sat nav system give you real-time traffic, weather and speed camera information and tell you where you can park off and even on street.
