Germany doubles EV incentives as part of recovery package
As part of an 130 billion economic recovery package, the German government is doubling incentives to buyers of battery-electric vehicles until the end of next year.
In spite of pleas from carmakers, ICE cars will not be included in the package.
Buyers of fully electric cars with a list price no higher than €40,000 will be eligible for a grant of €9,000 — one third of which will be funded by the carmakers. Plug-in hybrids are also eligible for the subsidy scheme.
More expensive vehicles, like many EVs from the stables of Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, will not be eligible for the full amount.
The programme will be particularly appreciated by buyers of vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.3 (pictured), with a €30,000 starting price in Germany. Vehicles like the Kia e-Niro and the Peugeot e-208 can also benefit from the incentive.
Meanwhile, the German dealership association ZDK has said the programme “is not even a drop in the ocean” to help sell the unsold inventory in dealer showrooms.
