More EVs than diesel cars sold in Luxembourg as market recovers

For the first time ever, more electric cars than diesel-powered cars were sold in Luxembourg in the first quarter of 2021.

In all, 37.3% of new registrations were for petrol cars, 30.3% were diesel and 32.4% were electric. Hybrid vehicles accounted for 24.1% and battery-electric ones for 8.3% of registrations.

Compared to last year, sales in the first quarter went up by 4.5% but this result is unsurprising considering the lockdown that was in force in March 2020. Compared to 2018 and 2019, the market was down 12.9% and 16.5%.

Nevertheless, the figures for March 2021 are encouraging, as the result of 4.967 new car sales is close to pre-pandemic levels.

Volkswagen led the OEM sales chart, followed by Mercedes and BMW. The Peugeot 208 was the most sold car.
