Dutch vehicle leases up 12.3% in 2019

In 2019, the volume of leased vehicles in the Netherlands increased by 12.3% compared to the previous year. One of the most remarkable drivers of growth was Tesla, which saw its lease registrations increase by 424%.

The total number of leased vehicles in the Netherlands last year was 234,088, an increase by about 26,000 units. Lease growth is concurrent with the growth of the overall vehicle market (+0.6% to 446.114 units) and in particular with the growth of the EV segment (+113.9% to 42,436 units), which was driven by the prospect of diminished fiscal advantages for EV purchases from 2020.

VW rules
As is traditional, Volkswagen ruled the lease ranking in 2019 – and by a comfortable margin. Tesla is a surprising second, well clear of Peugeot. Here is the complete Top 10: brand, total volume of leased vehicles (market share, change vs. 2018).

Model 3
Tesla’s Model 3 (pictured) was the most popular model in overall new-vehicle sales in the Netherlands last year, and the same applied to the lease market. Two other EVs made the Top 20: Kia’s Niro (#6) and Hyundai’s Kona (#12).
