BEVs outnumber PHEVs on UK roads, says RAC

For the first time, battery electric vehicles (BEV) outnumber plug-in hybrids on UK roads, says UK motoring organisation RAC.

Analysis of SMMT data by the RAC has revealed that there are now 332,299 BEVs on UK roads compared with 327,183 PHEVs.

BEVs now represent just over half (50.4%) of all plug-in cars on UK roads since 2010. This figure is up from 46.3% from this time in 2020. The highest number of BEV registrations in the UK happened in September 2021 when an additional 32,721 were registered - despite overall car sales figures being significantly down in that month.

BEVs still only represent 1% of the UK’s total car parc but the motoring organisation said the rate of growth over the past few years had been unprecedented. By the end of 2021, the total number of BEV sales in the UK will likely hit an all-time record of 175,000.
