Icelandic town paints 3D zebra crossing to slow down cars

A new way to paint zebra crossings could turn out to be a lifesaver, literally. Ísafjörður, a small town in Iceland, has refashioned the traditional white-striped pedestrian walkway so that it now resembles a three-dimensional road obstacle – sure to make motorists check what they're seeing and reduce their speed. As an added bonus, it gives pedestrians the impression that they're walking on air. 

The 3D zebra crossing was not invented in Iceland: environmental commissioner Ralf Trylla called for its introduction after having seen a similar project in New Delhi, India. It remains to be seen whether the optical illusion will become popular throughout the rest of Europe.
