Corporate bike leasing in Belgium up 127% since 2019

Corporate bike leasing is booming in Belgium. In the first half of 2022, 1.3% of all Belgian employees used a leased company bicycle to commute to work. That’s an increase of 9.1% on the same period in 2021, 38% more than in the first half of 2020 and a whopping 127.3% more than in the first six months of 2019.

The figures come from HR service provider Acerta, which surveyed 260,000 Belgian employees for their mobility behaviour. The company also explored some of the factors behind the success of corporate bicycling.

  • For one, there’s the cycle allowance (up to €0.24/km), which is a nice bonus for the employees, on top of the health and environmental benefits they generate. For now, only 20% of corporate cyclists get an allowance from their employees.
  • Also, Acerta says companies are no longer reflexively offering only company cars. Compared to a few years ago, they’re consciously adding more sustainable options to their mobility policies.

That second point also shows in other results of Acerta’s survey:

  • The share of PHEVs and BEVs in Belgium’s corporate fleet has increased (in H1 2022) to 11.24% of the total. That’s almost double the share compared to 2021 (6.78%), and that was more than double the share from 2020 (2.93%). Just five years ago, in 2017, EVs amounted to no more than 0.25% of Belgium’s corporate fleet.
  • In the first half of 2022, 2.8% of Belgian employees entitled to a company car had opted for a mobility budget instead. That’s a five-fold increase from the previous year.
