Volkswagen unveils mobile charging stations

Electric vehicles may be capable of driving ever longer distances on one charge, charging infrastructure still remains vital. In some places, it may not be feasible to install a charging station whereas in others, there may only be a need for charging stations at certain moments. That’s why Volkswagen has unveiled its mobile charging station.

Volkswagen’s mobile charging station has a 360kWh capacity (enough for up to 15 EVs) and boasts a fast charging technology that VW claims can charge a vehicle in only 17 minutes.

If the energy content of the integrated battery set drops below 20%, the depleted charging station can be exchanged for a charged one. Alternatively, it can be permanently linked to the power supply so it can be recharged perpetually. Combined with a renewable power source, the charging station allows the temporary storage of sustainably generated power.

The first mobile charging stations will be set up in the first half of 2019 as part of a pilot project in Volkswagen’s home town of Wolfsburg. Implementation in other cities will follow in 2020.
